Chromebooks are equipped with software known as the Chrome OS (Operating System). By default, Chrome OS is set to run on what is known as the "stable channel". This means your Chromebook laptop has the most stable version of the Chrome OS.
Before software is in its finalized and/or stable version, it goes through testing phases known as Alpha and Beta. Software in Alpha phases are incomplete or partially complete. After Alpha testing, software moves to the Beta testing phase. Software in Beta phase is complete but still contains bugs, glitches, and performance issues. Google allows Chromebook owners the option to switch from a "stable release/channel" to a "beta release/channel" of the Chrome OS to help test new features (and fix bugs and glitches).
I have tried and was the Beta channel for a few months. It was cool, but when I needed to get things done for work I got annoyed with the glitches like browser windows getting stuck and performance slowing down. So, if you are the adventurous type and want to try the Beta channel, here's what to do:
- In the Chrome browser,
- click on the three dots on the upper right hand that open a menu
- Scroll down to Help
- select About Chrome OS
- Click on Detailed Build Information.
- Under Channel, select Change Channel
- select Beta.
You can always switch back to the Stable channel if you don't like the Beta channel. Just follow the same instructions.
