There are add-ons that you can use to customize your Chromebook experience. The four types of add-ons are Extensions, Themes, Apps, & Games. You can access these add-ons from the Chrome Web Store.
Extensions,Themes, Apps and Games that you install on a Chromebook will automatically reappear when you sign into your Google account on any Chromebook.
The extensions and themes that you install can also be used on a Windows or Mac computer. Apps and Games cannot be accessed from a Windows or Mac computer.

Here are the extensions I have installed:
Google Translate - can translate a whole web page with this
Adblock Plus - ads have gotten out of control, this helps a lot
Google Dictionary - double click any word and a definition pops up
Google Keep Chrome Extension - Helps save info from the web quickly
Google Hangouts - I text/call from this extension
Chromebook Recovery Utility - I use this to create an installation disk of the Chrome OS.

I have a preference for dark themes, but there are lots of cool ones in the chrome web store. Here is the one I am currently running GData Centers 1 Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Apps

You can run apps on your Chromebook similar to running apps on your smartphone. Some apps are just web-based apps that will open up in a new tab. I don't use many apps, just the basic google apps. I also use JSTorrent for downloading torrents. If you are interested in apps that can be used offline, click here to view.

Most are just links that will open up in a Chrome Tab. Pretty lame IMO. You'll find a better gaming experience installing games from the Android Play Store (that's assuming your Chromebook can run Android apps).
