Factory Reset aka Powerwash

Just like other modern consumer electronic devices, there will come a time when you need to do a factory reset (aka powerwash) on your Chromebook. Reasons for this include: performance issues, glitches, or the system is not working properly. Powerwashing erases all of your data and resets the Chromebook back to new. This process is easy and fast and you can powerwash your Chromebook as many times as you want.

Reasons I powerwash include the following:
  • Performance issues after a year of heavy use.
  • Before selling a Chromebook.
  • After buying a used/refurbished Chromebook.

Prior to powerwashing, I recommend you review files from your "downloads" folder and save the ones you want to keep to a flash drive, memory card, or just upload them to your Google Drive. I also recommend to make sure you plug in your power cord if your battery is low.

Powerwash Method 1
Turn on your Chromebook. At the sign in screen, do not sign in. On your keyboard press and hold down ALT + CTRL + SHIFT + R keys. You should get a pop up confirming powerwash.

Powerwash Method 2
In the Chrome Browser, on the upper right, select the menu button (the three dots), select Help, select About Chrome OS. Select Powerwash for added security
